Felm has granted €30,000 in disaster aid to its partner, Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS), for the Kilwa region, which is suffering from the devastation caused by floods. Felm has been supporting TCRS’s work in Kilwa for many years. The aid covers 300 households (approximately 1,500 people).
“The situation in Kilwa is terrible. Up to 9,000 people are affected by the destruction caused by the floods,” says TCRS’s new Executive Director, Samuel Mlay.
Thousands of residents who lost their homes are still in temporary shelters and need not only food aid but also psychosocial support.
“Because there are so many in need, we must focus our assistance on those who require special support, namely the most vulnerable families, women, and people with disabilities.”
The two-month emergency relief operation includes the distribution of food aid, medicine, and seeds, as well as the provision of psychosocial support to vulnerable households. Local farmers lost their entire crops, and if new crops are not planted, the likelihood of a food crisis and even famine is evident.
Tanzania is increasingly suffering from extreme weather conditions caused by climate change. In May, heavy rains associated with cyclone Hidaya battered the country, causing floods along the Tanzanian coast, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure.
