The effects of Angola’s civil war are still visible in public services and infrastructure. Poverty, unemployment and economic inequality affect many families. Felm works with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Angola to train church workers and reach children who would otherwise have limited access to education.
Training for church workers
The Shangalala Institute trains pastors, deacons and local mission workers. Felm also helps the church improve its financial and project-management skills.
Across southern Africa, the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa (LUCSA) works with member churches to develop worship, gender justice and a locally rooted Lutheran identity, including in Angola.
Education and care for children
The Martin Luther School in Shangalala is a boarding school that gives particular consideration to children from remote areas and families living in poverty. The Happy Child programme in a low-income area of Lubango provides education, food and general knowledge to help children build a better future.
Sunday-school work and the distribution of Bibles to families also support children’s spiritual growth and literacy.
